Biblioteka Restaurant at Książ Castle

Our restaurant is set in the Gatehouse of Książ Castle, in the former library of the Hochberg family. For decades these very walls held shelves of books reached for by the castle’s residents and guests. Today, instead of volumes, we serve carefully prepared dishes.

We cook every day: Monday to Saturday from 12:00 to 21:30 and on Sundays until 20:00, regardless of the castle’s sightseeing hours. Reservations are taken by phone at +48 664 487 436 or through the contact form.

Bib Gourmand in the MICHELIN Guide 2026

The Bib Gourmand distinction goes to restaurants where the quality of the cooking goes hand in hand with a fair price — and that is exactly the place we have built.

Biblioteka Restaurant at Książ Castle is among the 19 new addresses honoured in the MICHELIN Guide Poland 2026 selection, the first to cover the whole country. This edition distinguished 38 restaurants in Poland, and ours is the only one in Wałbrzych.

In summer 2026 the guests of the FineDiningWeek festival voted us Best Menu and Best Debut in the Wrocław category, and second place among the best restaurants in the region.

Biblioteka Restaurant

The name is no accident — the place our restaurant occupies really was a library. Here, the hungry and the curious once fed on book collections from around the world. Today we have gathered the world’s flavours to combine them on the plate without pretence, and to satisfy our guests’ hunger quite literally.

Looking for a restaurant in Wałbrzych for a quiet lunch or a longer dinner? See what to know before your visit (in Polish).

„Our place is more than a restaurant. It is where passion meets experience, completed by a remarkable interior whose walls remember more than one great story."

Sznajder Café & Ice Cream Parlour

Right in the Gate leading to the courtyard is our café — usually the first to welcome guests, first with its buzz and a moment later with the smell of coffee. We serve carefully roasted beans from South America, teas from around the world, cakes and dessert monoportions from the hand of our master pastry chef. A chapter of its own is the ice cream, and none has made a greater career than the rose flavour — quite literally among all our guests.

The café is open daily from 10:00 to 18:00, so you can visit us before entering the sightseeing route or right after it. Discover the Sznajder Café (in Polish).

Where history meets flavour

Karl Johannes Endemann

Before anyone dined here, people read here — and not a little: the Hochberg book collection numbered over 65,000 volumes when it was moved to the Gatehouse in 1897. It was watched over by Karl Johannes Endemann (1860–1926), the castle teacher and librarian whose name the room we cook in bears today.

Librarian of the Hochbergs

The Endemann Room

The interior has been recreated with its original furniture, including eighteenth-century books and a mirror — a gift from Princess Daisy and Hans Heinrich XV. Those who have toured the castle collections sit down to dinner right among them, without a change of scenery.

Louis Hardouin & the Hochberg tradition

From 1909 to 1926 the Hochberg kitchen was led by Louis Hardouin (1877–1954) — a French-trained cook and a keen photographer. We reach for his legacy in our recreated tasting dinners, served in many courses in ceremonial style.

Gatherings at the castle table

The Gatehouse holds three spaces of different scale.

  • The main hall takes up to about fifty guests.
  • The mezzanine above the main hall takes up to twenty guests.
  • The wine cellar in the Tower is reserved for intimate groups of up to fifteen.
  • Together we host a maximum of seventy guests.

We host weddings, business dinners, company banquets, family celebrations, wine tastings with a sommelier and Christmas Eve dinners.

Up to nineteen guests we serve à la carte with the restaurant open. From twenty guests we agree the menu together before the event, so that every plate reaches the tables at the same moment. Booking the whole room exclusively carries an additional fee, agreed individually.

For larger bookings we can also reserve the Castle Car Park P-2 on the outer bailey for your guests and add its cost to the bill or the invoice.

Detailed terms and the enquiry form are on the events page.
